Domaine Leflaive
Batard Montrachet 2017
Domaine Leflaive
Divided into three separate parcels, two in Puligny and one in Chassagne, the Leflaive holdings in Bâtard amount to a more than satisfactory 1.5ha. Rich, concentrated and well upholstered, this is a plush, dense, palate-coating white that flirts with exotic fruit but finishes with focussed, chalky minerality.

MILES FROM NOWHERE
Best Block Chardonnay 2018
MILES FROM NOWHERE
The best blocks of Chardonnay fruit were harvested to produce this limited production. A portion of the juice was transferred directly to new French oak barriques for “natural fermentation”. The balance was inoculated with a yeast strain isolated from Burgundy. This yeast was chosen to enhance the varietal characters of the fruit and add complex fermentation characters such as fresh almond, hazelnut and toasted bread.

Domaine Leflaive
Bienvenues Batard Montrachet 2011
Domaine Leflaive
The nose is a little austere at first, but it unfolds nicely with impressive mineral (slate and flint) scents, well defined and poised. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. There is a bright citric heart to this Bâtard-Montrachet with fleeting touches of nectarine and citrus lemon joining the edgy mineral finish.

Bienvenues Batard Montrachet 2012
Domaine Leflaive
Mild reduction knocks down the nose but it seems reasonably clear that the underlying fruit is ripe. What immediately impresses about the broad-shouldered flavors is how fine they are which is not always the case with the typical Bâtard. This refinement only adds to the seductive palate feel of the extremely rich yet precisely focused, intense and strikingly long finish. 2012 should be a terrific vintage for this storied Wine though note that plenty of patience will be required as I doubt that this will drink especially well young.

Domaine Leflaive
Bienvenues Batard Montrachet 2013
Domaine Leflaive
This is aromatically both more elegant and more complex than the Combettes with its beautiful range of citrus, honeysuckle, pear and an appealing hint of tangerine peel. There is stunningly good purity of expression to the cool, restrained and understated medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the suave yet detailed finale that delivers seriously impressive length. The words 'pure class' aptly describe this beautifully balanced and age-worthy effort.

Domaine Leflaive
Bienvenues Batard Montrachet 2014
Domaine Leflaive
Bright, pale yellow. Deeply pitched, slightly reduced aromas of stone fruits, pineapple and honey. Fatter and sweeter than the Bienvenue, then broader and more powerful on the back half, showing a ripe pineapple character but coming across as bone-dry. Less harmonious than the Bienvenue and a bit more phenolic on the back end. This Wine will need a good seven or eight years of cellaring.

Bienvenues Batard Montrachet 2016
Domaine Leflaive
Bright, pale yellow. Deeply pitched aromas of mirabelle and white flowers. Broad, classically dry and utterly fine-grained, showing lovely inner-mouth floral perfume. Finishes with rising length and a slightly phenolic quality, leaving behind musky and resiny suggestions. Outstanding potential here.

Domaine Leflaive
Bienvenues Batard Montrachet 2017
Domaine Leflaive
Ripe yellow stone fruits and hazelnut on the nose. Dense, sappy and quite dry, with its rather bracing acidity (at the high end for these '17s) giving the saline middle palate outstanding precision. This very tight Wine is not yet displaying grand cru weight or palate presence but it spreads out and vibrates on the very long, pure, slowly building back end. This was the first '17 to finish both its alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, which may explain its peacock's tail of a finish.
