It is easy to underestimate this Wine. In its youth it can be explosive with luscious, expansive aromatics, just as now; but the palate tells a different story, which is tight, locked and uncommunicative – but that just sets things up for the future.

Great success in 2016, our Clous Aimé 2016 is powerful, dense with a soft and floral touch on the palate at the same time. A Wine of pleasure, without complexity and very attractive. No need to think about it, it simply must be drunk.

The 2017 Bouzeron is showing very well after a year in bottle, unfurling in the glass with scents of fresh peaches, white flowers, beeswax and green apples. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and lively, with good concentration and volume at the core, chalky structuring extract and a pure finish. This is well worth attention

The 2017 here is one of the most closed and youthful showing premier crus in the cellar, and a bit of coaxing is required to get the nose to reveal scents of apple, pear orange zest stony minerality, a hint of the almond to come and vanillin oak. On the palate the Wine is pure, full-bodied and fairly closed in profile, with lovely mid-palate depth, good backend soil signature, bright acids and a long, focused and racy finish

Pale yellow. Pear and white flowers on the nose. Concentrated but stony and closed on the palate, showing less fruit in the early going than the Chenevottes. Tactile, salty Wine with good breadth but only moderate length and grip.

A ripe and fresh nose exhibits a pretty combination of white peach, mandarin orange, anise and floral scents that are trimmed in discreet but not invisible wood. There is a subtle mineral influence to the well-detailed and caressing medium-bodied flavors that possess both excellent volume and intensity that manifests itself on the clean, dry and lingering if once again mildly warm finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate.

Here the nose is restrained to the point of being all but mute and only aggressive swirling coaxes the grudging aromas of pear, white peach, apricot, acacia blossom and discreet menthol nuances. As is usually the case there is more size, weight and muscle to the medium weight plus flavors that possess a hint of bitter lemon on the massively long finish. What I find interesting about the 2013 Bâtard is not only that it is more elegant then usual but also that it manages to deliver so much volume and power without any appreciable weight. In a word, brilliant.

Bright, pale yellow. Deeply pitched, slightly reduced aromas of stone fruits, pineapple and honey. Fatter and sweeter than the Bienvenue, then broader and more powerful on the back half, showing a ripe pineapple character but coming across as bone-dry. Less harmonious than the Bienvenue and a bit more phenolic on the back end.

Divided into three separate parcels, two in Puligny and one in Chassagne, the Leflaive holdings in Bâtard amount to a more than satisfactory 1.5ha. Rich, concentrated and well upholstered, this is a plush, dense, palate-coating white that flirts with exotic fruit but finishes with focussed, chalky minerality.

The nose is a little austere at first, but it unfolds nicely with impressive mineral (slate and flint) scents, well defined and poised. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. There is a bright citric heart to this Bâtard-Montrachet with fleeting touches of nectarine and citrus lemon joining the edgy mineral finish.

Mild reduction knocks down the nose but it seems reasonably clear that the underlying fruit is ripe. What immediately impresses about the broad-shouldered flavors is how fine they are which is not always the case with the typical Bâtard. This refinement only adds to the seductive palate feel of the extremely rich yet precisely focused, intense and strikingly long finish. 2012 should be a terrific vintage for this storied Wine though note that plenty of patience will be required as I doubt that this will drink especially well young.

This is aromatically both more elegant and more complex than the Combettes with its beautiful range of citrus, honeysuckle, pear and an appealing hint of tangerine peel. There is stunningly good purity of expression to the cool, restrained and understated medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the suave yet detailed finale that delivers seriously impressive length. The words 'pure class' aptly describe this beautifully balanced and age-worthy effort.

Ripe yellow stone fruits and hazelnut on the nose. Dense, sappy and quite dry, with its rather bracing acidity (at the high end for these '17s) giving the saline middle palate outstanding precision. This very tight Wine is not yet displaying grand cru weight or palate presence but it spreads out and vibrates on the very long, pure, slowly building back end. This was the first '17 to finish both its alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, which may explain its peacock's tail of a finish.

An ultra-elegant, pure and strikingly expressive nose of airy and intensely spicy acacia blossom, wet stone, lemon peel and various white-fleshed fruit aromas. There is a lilting mouth feel to the gorgeously intense, precise and cuts-like-a-knife medium weight plus flavors that brim with mineral and an abundance of dry extract that coats the palate on the hugely long finish. A trace of reduction detracts only marginally from the appeal of the otherwise pretty and mildly exotic aromas of acacia blossom, pear, mandarin orange and wet stone aromas. Like the Puligny villages the expressive nose plays right on the edge of exoticism with its dried yellow orchard fruit elements that add breadth if not necessarily elegance to the citrus, floral, spice and discreet herbal tea nuances. There is absolutely stunning intensity to the ultra-precise and stony flavors that are akin to rolling small rocks around in the mouth, all wrapped in a saline and kaleidoscopically complex finish that reminds me a great deal of a grand cru Chablis with its compact and linear finish.
